The purpose of this section of the Online Center for Ethics in Science and Engineering is to assist teachers who wish to integrate ethics and values into their pre-college science classes. There is little instructional material or guidance available for teachers to do this.
The first entry is Ethics in the Science Classroom: An Instructional Guide for Secondary School Science Teachers With Model room Use, by Theodore Goldfarb (Chemistry, SUNY at Stony Brook) and Michael Pritchard (Philosophy, Western Michigan University). It is based on a series of NSF-funded summer institutes for Long Island science teachers directed by Goldfarb and assisted by Pritchard.
Although Biology, with all of its exciting changes in recent years, seems like a natural place to encourage students to reflect on ethical issues, all of the sciences pose ethical questions for students. Ethics in the Science Classroom addresses the broad science curriculum and includes sample lesson plans prepared by teachers from Chemistry, the Earth Sciences, and Physics, as well as Biology.
We hope for the listings in this section to grow, and eventually to include materials for the entire K-12 curriculum. Readers are invited to send comments and suggestions for further inclusions
